A geo-stationary satellite is positioned in a specific orbit around the earth's equator, approximately 35,786 kilometers above the earth's surface. It orbits the earth at the same rotational speed as the earth, completing one orbit in 24 hours. This means that the time period of the satellite's orbit is the same as the time it takes for the earth to complete one rotation on its axis. This allows the satellite to appear stationary relative to an observer on the ground, hence the term "geo-stationary."
