Addition of carbon disulphide to a mixture containing iron filings and sulphur powder leads to the formation of a clear yellow solution when sulphur powder dissolves in carbon disulphide, on gentle shaking. Iron fillings being insoluble settle in the bottom. These can be separated by filtration. When the solution is allowed to evaporate, the powder of solid sulphur is obtained.

Separation of Iron Filings and Sulphur Powder using Carbon Disulphide:

To separate a mixture of iron filings and sulphur powder, the student can make use of the different solubility properties of iron filings and sulphur powder in carbon disulphide. Carbon disulphide is a suitable solvent for this separation process because it is capable of dissolving sulphur but not iron.

Procedure:

The student can follow the steps outlined below to separate the iron filings and sulphur powder using carbon disulphide:

1. Preparation:
- Set up a clean, dry beaker or test tube to hold the mixture.
- Ensure that the carbon disulphide is readily available.

2. Mixing:
- Add the mixture of iron filings and sulphur powder to the beaker or test tube.

3. Dissolving:
- Slowly pour an appropriate amount of carbon disulphide into the beaker or test tube containing the mixture.
- Stir the mixture gently to facilitate the dissolving process.
- Carbon disulphide will dissolve the sulphur powder, forming a yellow solution, while the iron filings remain intact.

4. Filtration:
- Place a filter paper in a funnel and set it over a clean container.
- Carefully pour the mixture into the funnel, allowing the yellow solution to pass through while trapping the iron filings in the filter paper.

5. Drying:
- After filtration, remove the filter paper with the trapped iron filings from the funnel.
- Allow the filter paper to dry naturally or use gentle heat to accelerate the drying process.

6. Collection:
- Once the filter paper is completely dry, carefully remove the iron filings from the filter paper and collect them in a separate container.

Conclusion:
By dissolving the mixture in carbon disulphide and filtering it, the student successfully separated the iron filings from the sulphur powder. The carbon disulphide dissolved the sulphur powder, allowing it to pass through the filter paper, while the iron filings were trapped and collected separately.
