The average age of a group of travellers is 25 years. For a certain trip to Australia, the average age has to be a maximum of 24 years, so they included A in their group to satisfy the criteria. For a certain trip to South Africa, the average age of the group has to be a minimum of 26 years. To satisfy this, the original group (excluding A) included B in their group. What is the average of the highest possible age of A and the lowest possible age of B?
  • a)
    20 years
  • b)
    24.5 years
  • c)
    25.5 years
  • d)
    25 years
Correct answer is option 'D'. Can you explain this answer?

Let the number of people in the group be n
For the maximum possible age of A,
24(n+1) = 25n + A
A = 24 - n
For minimum possible age of B,
26(n+1) = 25n + B
B = n + 26
Hence, average = (24 - n + n + 26)/2 = 25 years

Given:
Average age of the group = 25 years
Maximum average age for the trip to Australia = 24 years
Minimum average age for the trip to South Africa = 26 years

Let the age of A be x and the age of B be y.
We need to find (x+y)/2, which is the average of the highest possible age of A and the lowest possible age of B.

Explanation:
For the trip to Australia, the average age of the group has to be a maximum of 24 years.
So, we need to bring down the average age of the group. This can be done by adding someone younger to the group.

Let's assume that the age of A is 1 year. Now, the new average age of the group will be:
(25N + 1)/(N+1) <=>
25N + 1 <= 24n="" +="">
N <=>

This means that we can add A only if there are less than 24 people in the group.

For the trip to South Africa, the average age of the group has to be a minimum of 26 years.
So, we need to increase the average age of the group. This can be done by adding someone older to the group.

Let's assume that the age of B is 50 years. Now, the new average age of the group will be:
(25N - y)/(N-1) >= 26
25N - y >= 26N - 26
y <= -1="" +="">

This means that we can add B only if there are more than 1 person in the group.

Therefore, the highest possible age of A is 23 and the lowest possible age of B is 2.
Hence, the average of the highest possible age of A and the lowest possible age of B = (23+2)/2 = 25 years.

Hence, option D is the correct answer.
