The first pair of sentences share a relationship which indicates comparison. The second and the third pair have a contrasting relationship between their constituent sentences.
Among the connectors given, 'as if' and 'similarly' are used to show comparison. But they cannot connect the first pair, as using 'as if' would render the final sentence incoherent. 'In spite of' is used to show contrast. 'In spite of' is used when we want to state that a fact or an action is unaffected by another fact/action. 'Similarly' is used to indicate a similarity between two facts or events. 'Whereas' shows contrast, and 'such as' is used to illustrate a point i.e. to exemplify.
The second and third pairs can be combined by 'whereas'.
"A room painted in dark colours will need more light to be sufficiently illuminated, whereas a room with bright colours will contribute to lighting efficiency".
"The Arctic is an ocean basin with peripheral continents, whereas the Antarctic is a continent in itself".
D is the right answer.
