The balancing of chemical equations is based on the law of conservation of mass.
The law of conservation of mass states that matter can neither be created nor destroyed during a chemical reaction. This means that the total mass of the reactants (the substances being reacted) must be equal to the total mass of the products (the substances formed as a result of the reaction).
