Here always remember, when ever, x% loss,
it means S.P. = (100 - x) % of C.P
When ever, x% profit, it means S.P. = (100 + x) % of C.P
So here will be (100 - x) % of C.P.
= 80 % of 1200
= 80/100 x 1200
= 960

To find the selling price of the item, we need to calculate the amount of loss first and then subtract it from the purchase price.

Given:
Purchase price = Rs. 1200
Loss percentage = 20%

Step 1: Calculate the loss amount
The loss percentage is 20%, which means the item is sold at 80% of its original value. We can calculate the loss amount by finding 20% of the purchase price.

Loss amount = 20% of Rs. 1200
Loss amount = (20/100) * 1200
Loss amount = 0.2 * 1200
Loss amount = 240

Step 2: Calculate the selling price
The selling price is obtained by subtracting the loss amount from the purchase price.

Selling price = Purchase price - Loss amount
Selling price = 1200 - 240
Selling price = 960

Hence, the selling price of the item is Rs. 960.

Therefore, the correct answer is option 'D' Rs. 960.
