Solution:

Given:

  • 5 and 6 dozens of apples were packed in each box and 3 dozens were left.

  • 8 or 9 dozens of apples were packed in bigger boxes and still 3 dozens of apples remained.

To find:

The least number of dozens of apples to be packed.

Approach:

We will use the concept of LCM (Least Common Multiple) to find the least number of dozens of apples to be packed.

Calculations:

  • Let x be the number of boxes containing 5 dozens of apples.

  • Therefore, the number of boxes containing 6 dozens of apples will be (10 - x) as there are total of 10 boxes.

  • Also, 3 dozens of apples were left after packing in each box.

  • Therefore, the total number of dozens of apples packed in 10 boxes will be:

    • x * 5 + (10 - x) * 6 + 3 * 10

    • = 50 + 3x

  • Now, let y be the number of bigger boxes containing 8 dozens of apples.

  • Therefore, the number of bigger boxes containing 9 dozens of apples will be (5 - y) as there are total of 5 bigger boxes.

  • Also, 3 dozens of apples were left after packing in each bigger box.

  • Therefore, the total number of dozens of apples packed in 5 bigger boxes will be:

    • y * 8 + (5 - y) * 9 + 3 * 5

    • = 45 + 3y

  • As we know that there were 3 dozens of apples left after packing in both boxes and bigger boxes.

  • Therefore, we can write:

    • 50 + 3x = 45 + 3y

    • 5 = 3(y - x)

  • The LCM of 3 and 5 is 15.

  • Therefore, the smallest possible value of (y - x) will be 5/3 when y = 4 and x = 1.

  • Substituting these values in the above equations, we get:

    • x = 1

    • y = 4

    • Total dozens of apples packed = 50 + 3x = 53

Answer:

The least number of dozens of apples to be packed is 53.
