Active Transport Across Biomembranes

Active transport is the process of moving molecules or ions across a cell membrane from a region of lower concentration to a region of higher concentration, against the concentration gradient. This process requires the input of energy and is therefore an energy-dependent process.

Requirement of Energy

The energy required for active transport is obtained from the hydrolysis of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which is produced by the mitochondria through cellular respiration. ATP is a high-energy molecule that provides energy to the cell for various functions, including active transport.

Mechanism of Active Transport

Active transport occurs through the use of protein pumps or carriers in the cell membrane. These pumps or carriers bind to the molecule or ion to be transported and undergo a conformational change, which moves the molecule or ion across the membrane.

Examples of Active Transport

Two examples of active transport are the sodium-potassium pump and the proton pump. The sodium-potassium pump moves sodium ions out of the cell and potassium ions into the cell, while the proton pump moves hydrogen ions out of the cell.

Importance of Active Transport

Active transport is essential for many biological processes, including the absorption of nutrients in the intestines, the reabsorption of ions in the kidneys, and the transmission of nerve impulses.

Conclusion

Active transport is a crucial process that enables the cell to maintain the proper balance of molecules and ions. It requires the input of energy, which is obtained from the hydrolysis of ATP. Protein pumps or carriers in the cell membrane facilitate the movement of molecules or ions across the membrane.
