Molecular Mass Calculation


  • H2: The molecular mass of H2 can be calculated by adding the atomic masses of two hydrogen atoms. Atomic mass of H = 1u. Therefore, molecular mass of H2 = 2 x 1u = 2u.


  • NH3: The molecular mass of NH3 can be calculated by adding the atomic masses of one nitrogen atom and three hydrogen atoms. Atomic mass of N = 14u, atomic mass of H = 1u. Therefore, molecular mass of NH3 = 1 x 14u + 3 x 1u = 17u.



Explanation


  • The molecular mass of a compound is the sum of the atomic masses of all the atoms in the molecule.


  • In the case of H2, the molecule consists of two hydrogen atoms. Therefore, we add the atomic mass of one hydrogen atom to the atomic mass of the other hydrogen atom to get the molecular mass of H2.


  • Similarly, in the case of NH3, the molecule consists of one nitrogen atom and three hydrogen atoms. Therefore, we add the atomic mass of one nitrogen atom to the atomic mass of three hydrogen atoms to get the molecular mass of NH3.
