Direction: Read the instructions carefully and answer the question below.
There are eight north-facing building in a street. The cost of these building varies from each other. Also, the number of residents in the building are different for each building. The buildings are arranged in the decreasing order of their cost below:
P (18) > J (39) > N (26) > T (42) > B (13) > O (9) > Y (22) > K (44)
The number in the bracket represents the number of residents in the building.
There are only three buildings between the second-highest and second-lowest expensive buildings. The least expensive building is not to the next of the building which has 22 residents. There are five buildings between the third most expensive building and the building in which the number of residents is half of the third most expensive building. The most expensive building is to the immediate left of the building which has half the number of residents as the most expensive building. The building with the second-highest number of residents is to the immediate left of building N. The average number of residents in the two right-most building is 26.
Q. What is the average number of residents in the two building that are at the extreme ends?
  • a)
    24
  • b)
    35
  • c)
    32.5
  • d)
    27.5
  • e)
    30
Correct answer is option 'D'. Can you explain this answer?
Most Upvoted Answer
Direction: Read the instructions carefully and answer the question be...
(1) There are five buildings between the third most expensive building and the building in which the number of residents is half of the third most expensive building.
(It is given in the question that N is the third most expensive building. Also, the number of residents in building N is 26, implies, the other building is B in which the number of residents is 13. Also, as there are five building between these two buildings, implies, one of them must be at an end.)
(2) The average number of residents in the two right-most building is 26.
(Implies, the total number of people the two right-most buildings is 52. On observing the number of residents closely, we can say that there is only one pair of buildings that satisfies this criteria i.e. buildings J and B (39 and 13). So, it means that building B is either at the right-most end or the second position from the right-most end.)
(3) The building with the second highest number of residents is to the immediate left of building N.
(Building T has the second highest number of residents in it, implies, building T is to the immediate left of building N. In this case, building N must be at the second position from the left and building B must be at the right-most end.)
(4) There are only three buildings between the second highest and second lowest expensive buildings.
(J is the second most expensive building and Y is the second lowest expensive building. As building J is second from the right end, implies, building Y must be the third building from the left end.)
(5) The least expensive building is not to the next of the building which has 22 residents.
(Implies, building K is not next to building Y as building Y has 22 residents.)
(6) The most expensive building is to the immediate left of the building which has half the number of residents as the most expensive building.
(P is the most expensive building and building O has half the number of residents as building P. Now, we cannot place building K to the immediate right of building Y. If we place building K second to the right of building Y then, in that case, we would not be able to place building P to the immediate left of building O.
Thus, building K is third to the right of building Y. Building P is to the immediate right of building Y and building O is to the immediate right of building P.)
Building T and B are at the extreme ends and the total number of people in these two buildings is 55.
Thus, the average number of residents in these two buildings is 27.5.
Hence, the correct option is (D).
