Three years ago, the average age of the family of 5 members was 17 yea...
Solution:

Let the present age of child be x.

Average age of family = Sum of ages of all family members / Number of family members

Before the birth of child, the total age of the family = 5 × 17 = 85

After the birth of child, the total age of the family = (5 + 1) × 17 = 102

As per the question, the present average age of the family remains the same even after the birth of a child.

Therefore, 85 + x = 102 / 6

Solving the above equation, we get x = 2 years.

Hence, the present age of the child is 2 years.

Therefore, option D is the correct answer.

Three years ago average age of family = 17 years
so present average age of family=20 years
Total age of the 5 members at present=20×5=100 years
Total present age of 6 members at present=17 × 6 = 102
Age of child = 102 – 100
= 2 years
