Unpolarized light of intensity I0 passes through a polarizer P1. The light coming out of the polarizer falls on a quarter- wave plate with its optical axis at 45º with respect to the polarization axis of P1 and then passes through another polarizer P2 with its polarization axis perpendicular to that of P1.
The intensity of the light coming out of P2 is I. The ratio I0/ I is _______.
Specify your answer to two digits after the decimal point.)
Correct answer is '4'. Can you explain this answer?

    Explanation:

    • Unpolarized light of intensity I0 passes through a polarizer P1.

    • Let the intensity of light passing through P1 be I1.

    • As P1 is a polarizer, it only allows the light vibrating in the direction of its polarization axis to pass through it.

    • Hence, I1 = I0/2 (as half of the light is blocked by P1)

    • The light coming out of P1 falls on a quarter-wave plate with its optical axis at 45 with respect to the polarization axis of P1.

    • As the optical axis of the quarter-wave plate is at 45 with respect to the polarization axis of P1, the light passing through it gets converted into circularly polarized light.

    • The circularly polarized light then passes through the polarizer P2 with its polarization axis perpendicular to that of P1.

    • As P2 is a polarizer, it only allows the light vibrating in the direction of its polarization axis to pass through it.

    • As the polarization axis of P2 is perpendicular to that of P1, it blocks all the circularly polarized light passing through it.

    • Hence, the intensity of the light coming out of P2 is zero.

    • Therefore, I/I0 = 0/I1 = 0/(I0/2) = 0.

    • So, the ratio I0/I = 4.
