Consider the following statements:I. Thermal stabilities of carbonat...
Statement I: Thermal stabilities of carbonates of alkaline earth metals increases down the group.
Explanation: The thermal stability of carbonates of alkaline earth metals decreases down the group. This is because as we move down the group, the size of the cation increases, leading to a decrease in the charge density. As a result, the polarizing power of the cation decreases, making it difficult to polarize the carbonate ion. Therefore, the stability of the carbonate decreases down the group. So, statement I is incorrect.

Statement II: Except LiOH, hydroxides of all other alkali metals are thermally stable.
Explanation: The hydroxides of alkali metals are thermally stable except for LiOH. LiOH decomposes on heating to form Li2O and H2O. Therefore, statement II is correct.

Statement III: Li2CO3 is thermally stable whereas, other carbonates of the group are thermally unstable.
Explanation: Li2CO3 is the only thermally stable carbonate among the carbonates of alkali metals. All other carbonates of alkali metals decompose on heating to form metal oxides and carbon dioxide. Therefore, statement III is correct.

Statement IV: Solubilities of hydroxides of alkaline earth metals increases down the group.
Explanation: The solubility of hydroxides of alkaline earth metals increases down the group. This is because as we move down the group, the size of the cation increases, leading to a decrease in the lattice energy of the hydroxide. As a result, the solubility of the hydroxide increases. Therefore, statement IV is correct.

In conclusion, statements II, III, and IV are correct, while statement I is incorrect. Therefore, the correct option is (c) I, II, IV.

Consider the following statements:I. Thermal stabilities of carbonat...
Li2CO3 is thermally unstable due to covalent nature. Lattice energies of carbonates of alkaline earth metals increase down the group due to increased ionic nature. LiOH is covalent in nature due to polarisation of electronic cloud of anion by Li+ (small size).
Li2CO3 is less stable than other carbonates and hydroxides of alkaline earth metals. Solubility increases due to decrease in lattice energy.
