The moon appears to change its shape every day due to a combination of its rotation and revolution around the Earth. This phenomenon is known as the lunar phases.

1. Lunar phases:
The moon goes through a cycle of different shapes, which are referred to as lunar phases. These phases include the new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, third quarter, and waning crescent.

2. Rotation and revolution:
The moon rotates on its axis, just like the Earth does. However, its rotation speed is such that it takes the same amount of time to complete one rotation as it does to complete one revolution around the Earth. This is known as synchronous rotation.

3. Synchronous rotation:
As a result of synchronous rotation, we always see the same side of the moon from Earth. This is why we often refer to the "dark side of the moon," even though it is not actually dark, just not visible from Earth.

4. Illumination from the Sun:
The moon does not have its own light source, but it reflects the light of the Sun. The changing appearance of the moon is caused by the varying amount of sunlight that is reflected towards Earth as the moon orbits around it.

5. Lunar phases and sunlight:
During the new moon phase, the side of the moon facing Earth is not illuminated by the Sun, making it appear dark. As the moon continues its orbit, an increasing portion of the illuminated side becomes visible from Earth, leading to the waxing crescent, first quarter, and waxing gibbous phases.

6. Full moon phase:
When the moon reaches the opposite side of its orbit, the entire illuminated side is visible, and we observe a full moon.

7. Waning phases:
After the full moon, the moon begins to move back towards the new moon phase. As a result, the illuminated portion visible from Earth gradually decreases, leading to the waning gibbous, third quarter, and waning crescent phases.

8. Repeating cycle:
The lunar phases cycle repeats approximately every 29.5 days, which is known as a lunar month.

In conclusion, the moon appears to change its shape every day due to its rotation and revolution around the Earth, causing different amounts of sunlight to be reflected towards us. This leads to the different phases of the moon that we observe from Earth.

Since the moon rotates and revolves at the same speed, the same side of the moon always faces us. Depending on the position of the sun, different areas of it reflect light to us on different days and the moon appears to change its shape every day.
