Given Information:
- Seven students P, Q, R, S, T, U and V take a series of tests.
- No two students get similar marks.
- V always scores more than P.
- P always scores more than Q.
- Each time either R scores the highest and T gets the least, or alternatively. S scores the highest and U or Q scores the least.

Rankings of students:
1. Either R or S
2. Either R or S
3. The student who was not ranked first in step 2.
4. The student who was not ranked first in step 3.
5. Q
6. S
7. The student who was not ranked third in step 2.

Given that S is ranked sixth and Q is ranked fifth, we can conclude the following:

- S is ranked sixth, so the student who was not ranked third in step 2 must be ranked first and second. Therefore, either R or S is ranked first and the other is ranked second.
- Q is ranked fifth, so the student who was not ranked first in step 3 must be ranked third or fourth. Therefore, either the student who was ranked first in step 2 or the student who was ranked second in step 2 is ranked third or fourth.
- Since V always scores more than P, V cannot be ranked lower than P. Therefore, V must be ranked either fifth or fourth.
- Since P always scores more than Q, P cannot be ranked lower than Q. Therefore, P must be ranked either second or fifth.
- Each time either R scores the highest and T gets the least, or alternatively, S scores the highest and U or Q scores the least. Therefore, T must be ranked either fourth or fifth.

Hence, the possible rankings of the students are as follows:

- R is ranked second or third (from step 1)
- P is ranked second or fifth (from step 4)
- V is ranked fifth or fourth (from step 3)
- T is ranked fourth or fifth (from step 5)

Therefore, option D is the correct answer.
