Iskander Mirza was the first president of Pakistan

Background
Pakistan gained independence from British rule on August 14, 1947. It became a dominion within the British Commonwealth, with Muhammad Ali Jinnah as its Governor-General. In 1956, Pakistan became a republic, with its own constitution and a president as its head of state.

Iskander Mirza's Presidency
Iskander Mirza was a civil servant and a diplomat who served in various capacities under the British, as well as the Pakistani government. He was appointed as the first president of Pakistan on March 23, 1956, after the adoption of the country's first constitution.

During his presidency, Iskander Mirza faced various challenges, including political instability, economic problems, and tensions with neighboring India. He dissolved the first constituent assembly in 1958, citing its inability to draft a new constitution.

In October 1958, Iskander Mirza declared martial law and appointed General Ayub Khan as the new chief martial law administrator. Ayub Khan eventually took over the presidency from Iskander Mirza in 1958, in a bloodless coup.

Conclusion
Iskander Mirza's presidency was short-lived, but it marked an important milestone in Pakistan's history as a republic. His decision to impose martial law paved the way for Ayub Khan's authoritarian rule, which lasted for over a decade.
