Markownikoff’s rule states that the addition of unsymmetrical reagents to unsymmetrical alkenes occurs in such a way that the negative part of the addendum goes to that carbon atom of the double bond which carries the lesser number of hydrogen atoms.

- When an unsymmetrical alkene reacts with a hydrogen halide (HX), the hydrogen atom from HX attaches itself to the carbon atom of the double bond that already has more hydrogen atoms attached to it.
- This results in the formation of the more stable carbocation intermediate, which is called the Markownikoff's rule.
- This rule is based on the stability of the intermediate carbocation formed during the addition process. The stability of the carbocation is determined by the number of alkyl groups attached to the positively charged carbon atom.
- The more substituted carbocation is more stable due to the inductive effect and hyperconjugation of alkyl groups. Therefore, the negative part of the addendum (like halide ion) will be directed to the carbon atom of the double bond with fewer alkyl groups, following Markownikoff's rule.
