Atmospheric nitrogen cannot be used by plants , animals and other living organisms. nitrogen can be used by them only in the form of their oxides (i.e.,NO² and NO³) thus there are some nitrogen fixing bacteria that fixes the atmospheric nitrogen into nitrates or nitrites in oder to make it useful for living beings  and these oxides are again denitrified by some bacterias and goes in our environment again ...so here is a biogeochemical cycle of nitrogen in our surroundings
