Changes in the Marking Scheme for IIT JAM Physics Exam
The Indian Institute of Technology Joint Admission Test for M.Sc. (IIT JAM) is a national level entrance exam conducted for admission to postgraduate programs in various science disciplines, including Physics. The marking scheme for the IIT JAM Physics exam has undergone a few changes in recent years. Here are the details:
1. Total Marks:
- Previously, the total marks for the IIT JAM Physics exam were 100. However, as per the latest updates, the total marks have been reduced to 75.
2. Section-wise Distribution:
- The IIT JAM Physics exam consists of three sections: Section A, Section B, and Section C.
- Previously, Section A had 30 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) carrying 1 or 2 marks each, while Section B had 10 multiple-select questions (MSQs) carrying 2 marks each, and Section C had 20 numerical answer type (NAT) questions carrying 1 or 2 marks each.
- However, with the revised marking scheme, Section A now has 15 MCQs carrying 1 mark each and 10 MCQs carrying 2 marks each, while Section B has 10 MSQs carrying 2 marks each, and Section C has 10 NAT questions carrying 1 mark each and 5 NAT questions carrying 2 marks each.
3. Negative Marking:
- Previously, there was negative marking only for Section A, where 1/3 mark was deducted for each wrong answer in 1 mark questions, and 2/3 mark was deducted for each wrong answer in 2 mark questions.
- With the revised marking scheme, negative marking is applicable to all sections. In Section A, 1/3 mark is deducted for each wrong answer in 1 mark questions, and 2/3 mark is deducted for each wrong answer in 2 mark questions. In Section B, 2/3 mark is deducted for each wrong answer, and in Section C, no negative marking is applicable.

- With the revised marking scheme, the total marks for Section A are 50, for Section B are 20, and for Section C are 5. The weightage for Section A has been reduced, while the weightage for Section C has been significantly reduced.
These changes in the marking scheme for the IIT JAM Physics exam aim to provide a more balanced assessment of the candidates' knowledge and skills. It is important for aspirants to be familiar with the revised scheme while preparing for the exam to optimize their performance and score well.
