According to a report by the World Health Organization, there  have been  4.7 million possible ( 47.4 lakh people ) deaths due to COVID-19 in India in 2020 and 2021, directly or indirectly .
Important facts:
  • India officially  estimated only 4.8 lakh cumulative deaths linked to COVID-19 by December 2021  , which means the World Health Organization's estimate is almost  10 times  the official count.
  • The World Health Organization said that in the past two years, about  15 million people  have lost their lives either to the corona virus or to its effects on health systems.
  • In India,  there were 5.3 lakh deaths among men aged 60 and above in 2020 and 19 lakh deaths in the same age group in 2021  .
  •  On the other hand, there were 3.5 lakh deaths among women aged 60 years and above in 2020 and 15 lakh in 2021  .
  • Minutes after the WHO released its estimate, India "objected" the methodology used by  the organisation.
