Geothermal Energy: The heat that comes from the earth's subsurface is known as geothermal energy.
  • It can be present in the minerals and fluids underneath the earth's surface, as well as in the hot molten rock known as magma.
  • As it is not dependent on any other factor like sunlight, wind, pressure etc, it can be used all the times.
  • Mile deep wells are drilled into underground lakes to access steam and hot water, which can then be used to power turbines attached to electricity generators.
  • Dry steam, flash, and binary geothermal power plants are the three types of geothermal power plants.
    • The oldest type of geothermal technology is dry steam, which extracts steam from the ground and uses it to directly drive a turbine.
    • Binary plants move hot water into a second liquid with a lower boiling point, which transforms to vapour to drive the turbine,
    • Flash plants use high-pressure hot water into cold, low pressure water
  • Wind Power: It is generated by the force that wind exerts on the blades of a turbine, causing the turbine's shaft to rotate at a speed of 10 to 20 revolutions per minute (rpm). The rotor shaft is connected to a generator that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy.
    • The amount of energy is generated by a wind turbine depends on:- 1) wind power (main factor) 2) the area swept by the blades 3) air density
    • A  minimum wind speed (generally 12 -14km/ph) to begin turning and generate electricity.
    • strongly winds (50 - 60 km/hr) to generate at full capacity.
    • As it depends on high velocity winds, it cannot be harnessed all the times.
  • Solar Energy: It is the energy generated by utilizing energy of the sunlight. To use it we can make solar equipments like solar cooker or can convert it into electricity by using solar panels. It depends on availability of sunlight. Hence it cannot be harnessed all the times.
