Reservation Policy for Children of Defense Personnel in the NDA Exam


The National Defence Academy (NDA) is a prestigious institution that trains cadets for entry into the Indian Armed Forces. The NDA exam is conducted twice a year by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). To encourage the participation of children of defense personnel, the NDA exam has a reservation policy in place.


The reservation quota for children of defense personnel in the NDA exam is as follows:

Army quota: 32 seats are reserved for candidates who are sons or stepsons of serving, retired, or deceased Army personnel.

Navy quota: 6 seats are reserved for candidates who are sons or stepsons of serving, retired, or deceased Navy personnel.

Air Force quota: 10 seats are reserved for candidates who are sons or stepsons of serving, retired, or deceased Air Force personnel.


To be eligible for the reservation quota, candidates must meet the following criteria:

1. The candidate must be the son or stepson of a defense personnel (serving, retired, or deceased).
2. The candidate must meet the age and educational qualifications required for the NDA exam, which include being between 16.5 and 19.5 years of age and having completed 10+2 education or its equivalent.


The selection process for candidates under the reservation quota is the same as for other NDA aspirants. It consists of a written examination followed by an interview conducted by the Services Selection Board (SSB).


Candidates applying under the reservation quota need to follow the regular application process for the NDA exam. They can apply online through the UPSC website or submit a physical application form to the designated authorities.


Candidates applying under the reservation quota need to submit the following documents:

1. Proof of relationship with the defense personnel (such as a birth certificate or a certificate of adoption).
2. Proof of the defense personnel's service (such as a service certificate or a pension payment order).
3. Any other documents specified by the UPSC or the NDA authorities.
