The capital of the United States of America is Washington, D.C. It is located along the east coast of the country, between the states of Maryland and Virginia. The city was founded in 1791 and named after George Washington, the first president of the United States.
History of Washington, D.C.
The land that would become Washington, D.C. was originally owned by the state of Maryland. However, the federal government needed a separate district to serve as the nation's capital, free from the influence of any individual state. In 1790, the Residence Act was passed, which authorized the creation of a new capital district along the Potomac River.
The city was designed by Pierre Charles L'Enfant, a French-American architect and urban planner. His plan for the city included grand boulevards, public squares, and impressive buildings, including the White House and the Capitol building.
