According to weiner hypothesis regarding Rh antigen system, the number of genotypes which produce Rh+ phenotype are?
Verified Answer
According to weiner hypothesis regarding Rh antigen system, the number...
The Rh antigen system is a blood group system that is determined by the presence or absence of the RhD antigen on red blood cells. The RhD antigen is encoded by the RHD gene, which has several different alleles (variants).
According to the Weiner hypothesis, there are two genotypes that produce the Rh+ phenotype, which is characterized by the presence of the RhD antigen on red blood cells:
- RHD+: This genotype is characterized by the presence of the RHD+ allele, which codes for the production of the RhD antigen. Individuals with this genotype will have the Rh+ phenotype.
- RHD-D: This genotype is characterized by the presence of two copies of the RHD- allele, which does not code for the production of the RhD antigen. However, individuals with this genotype will still have the Rh+ phenotype due to a phenomenon known as cis-expression, in which the RHD- allele is able to express the RhD antigen on the surface of red blood cells.
Thus, there are a total of two genotypes that produce the Rh+ phenotype according to the Weiner hypothesis.

Weiner Hypothesis on Rh Antigen System:

Rh antigen system, discovered by Karl Landsteiner and Alexander Wiener, is a complex blood group system with over 50 antigens. According to Weiner's hypothesis, the Rh antigen is controlled by a single gene with two codominant alleles, D and d.

Number of Genotypes Producing Rh+ Phenotype:

- There are three possible genotypes that can produce the Rh+ phenotype:
1. DD (homozygous dominant)
2. Dd (heterozygous)
3. dd (homozygous recessive)

- In the case of the Rh antigen system, the presence of at least one dominant allele (D) results in the expression of the Rh antigen (Rh+ phenotype). Therefore, individuals with genotypes DD and Dd will have the Rh+ phenotype.

- Since both DD and Dd genotypes result in the Rh+ phenotype, the number of genotypes that produce the Rh+ phenotype according to Weiner's hypothesis is two: DD and Dd.

- Individuals with the dd genotype will not express the Rh antigen and will have the Rh- phenotype.
