Each of the questions below consists of a question and two statements numbered I and II given below it. You have to decide whether the data provided in the statements is sufficient to answer the question:
What is speed of train B?
I. Train A crosses a bridge of length 360 meter and a train B having length 225 meter running in same direction in 24 secs and 31 sec respectively, considering speed of train B is more than train A.
II. Train B crosses a bridge of length 375 meter and a train C having length 450 meter running in opposite direction in 15 secs and 11.25 sec respectively.
  • a)
If the data in Statement I alone is sufficient to answer the question, while the data in Statement II alone is not sufficient to answer the question.
  • b)
If the data in Statement II alone is sufficient to answer the question, while the data in Statement I alone is not sufficient to answer the question.
  • c)
If the data either in Statement I alone or in Statement II alone is sufficient to answer the question.
  • d)
If the data in both the Statements I and II together are not sufficient to answer the question.
  • e)
If the data in both the Statements I and II together are necessary to answer the question.
Correct answer is option 'E'. Can you explain this answer?

Each of the questions below consists of a question and two statements ...
From I:
We have:
Let length of train A be Y meter
Length of bridge crossed by train A = 360 meter
Speed of train A = (Y + 360)/24
Length of train B = 225 meter
Let speed of train B be S m/sec
Relative speed of train A with respect to train B = (S - (Y + 360)/24)
(S - (Y + 360)/24) = (Y + 225)/31
Since, length of train A is not known.
Thus, speed of train B can't be calculated.
Hence, statement I alone is not sufficient.
From II:
We have:
Let length of train B be Y meter
Length of bridge crossed by train B = 375 meter
Speed of train B = (Y + 375)/15
Length of train C = 450 meter
Let speed of train C be K m/sec
Relative speed of train B with respect to train C = ((Y + 375)/15 + K)
((Y + 375)/15 + K) = (Y + 450)/11.25
Thus, speed of train B can't be calculated.
Hence, statement II is not sufficient.
From I and II:
Based on above data we get:
Speed of train B while crossing bridge of length 375 m = (225 + 375)/15 = 40 m/sec
Hence, statement I and II together are sufficient.
