A conversion of liquid into gas needs kinetic energy to overcome the intermolecular force.As ice changes to water on heating, the heat energy changes into kinetic energy. This hidden heat (which cannot be observed on thermometer) is known as 'latent heat'. Thus, the particles of matter collide with each other and split far beyond, altering the intermolecular force and intermolecular space inversely (intermolecular force decreases). Thus, there is no change in the temperature as lot of heat energy is utilised in the phenomenon.
