- A check dam is a small dam constructed across a drainage ditch or waterway to counteract erosion by reducing water flow velocity.
- They are used primarily to control water velocity, conserve soil, and improve the land. Therefore, the Check dam is a soil conservation structure.
- Their construction improves water availability.
- As and when waste/ unused water flows out of the farmland, then can be collected, and reused later. The same water can be pumped back to the fields when required and by doing so it will reduce the amount of new water that needs to be utilized again.
