Ranging: When the distance to be measured between two station is too long or more than the chain length and ends are not intervisible, a number of intermediate points are marked with ranging rods. This process is known as ranging.
1) Direct Ranging- ranging rods are placed on intermediate points along the chain line by direct observation from either end stations.
2) Indirect Ranging- it is done when end stations are not intervisible due to rising ground between them.
