The reaction of 11.6 g of the aldehyde A with 462 mg of Wilkinson&rsqu...
This problem can be solved using the mole concept
  • 1 mol of A reacts with (Ph3P)RhCl to form 1 mol of B.
  • Now,
1 mol of A = 1 mol of B
11.6/232 mole of A = 9.2/204 mole of B
0.05 mole of A = 0.045 mole of B
  • Thus, the % yield of B is,
= (0.045/0.05) x 100%
= 90 %
  • The use of catalyst in term of percentage mole can be calculated as 11.6/232 mole is used with 9.2/204 mole of catalyst is 0.05 mole of A = 0.005 mole of Catalyst
  • Thus, the mol % of the catalyst used
    = (0.005/0.05) x 100%
    = 1%
Hence, the mol % of the catalyst used and the yield of the reaction, approximately are 1.0 mol %; and 90%.
