What is the effect on the strength of concrete on addition of pozzolan...

Effect of addition of pozzolanas in concrete:

It reacts with calcium hydroxide and decreases the heat of hydration.
The early strength decreases but the ultimate strength remain almost the same.
It also helps in improving workability and resistance against external agents.
Puzzolana finds its applications where the slower gain of strength is required.
Silica fume, fly ash, blast furnace slag, etc. are the most commonly used pozzolanic materials.

Following are the effect of concrete on addition of pozzolanas.

Pozzolana due to its ball bearing action increases the workability without increasing the amount of water but the amount of pozzolana should be in appropriate amount otherwise it will make paste sticky.
Pozzolana react slowly so initially heat of hydration is low and strength of concrete is also decreases but the ultimate strength remain same.
Pozzolana + Ca (OH)₂— C-S-H ( low density). On the later stage more C-S-H gel form and fill the void so make the concrete durable and increases the resistance against sulphate attack.
Pozzolana reacts with excess Ca (OH)₂. So Ca (OH)₂ amount reduces.
