Why February has 28 or 29 days?

Explanation:

  • Origins of the calendar: The calendar we use today is called the Gregorian calendar. It has 12 months, with 30 or 31 days, except for February. This calendar system was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582.

  • Julian calendar: Before the Gregorian calendar, the Julian calendar was used. In the Julian calendar, February had 28 days, and every fourth year had an extra day, making it a leap year with 29 days in February.

  • Leap years: The reason for having leap years is to account for the fact that it takes the Earth approximately 365.25 days to orbit the sun. By adding an extra day every four years, we can keep our calendar in sync with the Earth's orbit.

  • Exceptions: While most leap years have 29 days in February, not every fourth year is a leap year. Years that are divisible by 100 are not leap years unless they are also divisible by 400. This rule was introduced to make the calendar even more accurate.
