Explanation:

When an induction motor is directly switched on, it experiences a high inrush current due to the magnetizing current required to establish the magnetic field in the stator. This inrush current can be up to 6-7 times the rated current of the motor.

As a result of this high inrush current, the motor develops a high starting torque. This starting torque is usually 1.5 to 2.5 times the full load torque of the motor.

However, direct switching on of an induction motor can cause several problems such as high starting current, high mechanical stress on the motor shaft, and reduced motor life. Hence, it is advisable to use some form of motor starting technique such as star-delta starting or soft starters to reduce the inrush current and starting torque of the motor.
