Fill in the blanks (a, b, c and d) in the following statements with a ...
Concept:
  • Plants' reaction to intervals of light and darkness is called photoperiodism.
  • To begin flowering, some plants need a particular ratio of light and darkness.
  • Certain physiological processes depend on how long the light and dark phases are relative to one another.
  • The seasons of light and darkness are sensed by leaves.
  • A hormonal substance is created that starts blooming when a plant receives the proper quantity of photoperiod, which is required to trigger flowering.
  • The hormone causes flowering at the shoot apices after being delivered there.
Explanation:
The plants can be divided into three groups based on how much darkness and light are needed. As follows
  • Long-day plants:
    • When the length of the night falls below their essential photoperiod, long-day plants bloom.
    • As the days become longer, these plants often flower in late spring or early summer.
    • The longest day of the year (summer solstice) falls on or around June 21 in the northern hemisphere.
    •  After that day, the days get shorter (and the nights get longer) until the winter solstice on December 21.
  • Long Day Flowers:
    • For long-day plants to flower, they need light that is well above the essential photoperiod.
    • They typically bloom in the early summer and late spring, or any other time of year with long days.
    • While facultative long day plants flower in any photoperiod, flowering occurs more quickly under a certain photoperiod, obligate long day plants strictly only flower when the plant is exposed to the required photoperiod.
  • Short Day Plants:
    • When the night durations are longer than their essential photoperiod, short-day plants bloom.
    • They require a sustained period of darkness before floral growth can start; they cannot flower during short nights or if a pulse of artificial light is shined on the plant for few minutes throughout the night.
    • Moonlight and lightning are examples of natural nighttime light, but neither is bright enough or long enough to stop blossoming.
    • Generally speaking, short-day (also known as long-night) plants bloom after June 21 in the northern hemisphere, which is in the summer or autumn.
    • Different species and variants of a species have different requirements for the length of the dark period needed to trigger flowering.
    • By causing the shoot to develop floral buds instead of leaves and lateral buds, photoperiodism impacts blooming.
  • Short Day flowers:
    • A continuous period of darkness is necessary for flowering in the short day plants.
    • The facultative short day plants flower in any photoperiod, however flowering is more rapid during a specific dark period.
    • In contrast, the obligate short day plants strictly only flower when the necessary dark period is present.
    • Various plants have different requirements for the length of the dark time before flowering.
    • African marigold and hyacinth bean (Lablab purpureus) are examples of short-day obligatory plants (Tagetes erecta)
    • Rice, soybeans (Glycine max), cotton (Gossypium), and short-day facultative plants (Oryza).

Hence the correct answer is option 1.
