- α particles have a charge of +2e (twice the elementary charge) and a mass of about 4 atomic mass units (amu), so their e/m value is approximately 2/(4 u) = 0.5 e/amu.
- β particles can have different charges and masses depending on whether they are beta-minus (β-) or beta-plus (β+) particles. β- particles have a charge of -e (negative elementary charge) and a mass similar to that of an electron, about 1/1836 amu, so their e/m value is approximately -1/(1/1836 u) = -1836 e/amu. β+ particles have a charge of +e and the same mass as β- particles, so their e/m value is also -1836 e/amu (but positive).
