Excess of hydrochloric acid in the diazotisation of aniline

Supression of free aniline
When aniline reacts with nitrous acid (formed from sodium nitrite in the presence of HCl), diazonium salt is formed. This ensures that most of the aniline is converted to the diazonium salt, leading to a higher yield of the desired product.
