Explanation of the setup


  • Two solutions of glucose, one with 3% concentration and the other with 8% concentration, are kept in a trough.

  • The trough is divided by a semi-permeable membrane that allows the passage of water molecules but not glucose molecules.

  • The two solutions are in contact with the membrane but are not allowed to mix.



What happens after 1 hour?


  • Initially, the water molecules will move from the side with higher concentration of water (3% glucose solution) to the side with lower concentration of water (8% glucose solution).

  • This will continue until the concentration of water molecules is equal on both sides of the membrane.

  • As a result, the volume of the 3% glucose solution will decrease while the volume of the 8% glucose solution will increase.



Effect on glucose concentration


  • Since the glucose molecules cannot pass through the membrane, the concentration of glucose will remain the same on both sides of the membrane.

  • However, the concentration of glucose in the 8% glucose solution will appear to increase as the volume of the solution increases due to the movement of water molecules.



Conclusion


  • After 1 hour, the volume of the 3% glucose solution will decrease while the volume of the 8% glucose solution will increase due to the movement of water molecules through the semi-permeable membrane.

  • The concentration of glucose will remain the same on both sides of the membrane.

Solution of 3% glucose is hypotonic compared to solution of 8% glucose. Since the membrane separation them is semi-permeable, water from the hypotonic solution (or 3% glucose solution) will move to the hypertonic solution(or 8% glucose solution). Hence, after 1 hour, the volume of 8% glucose solution will increase and volume of 3% glucose solution will decrease.
