The
Constitution of India
is the supreme law governing the country.
The seventh schedule under
Article 246 of the constitution deals with the division of powers between the union and the states.
The
constitutional provisions in India on the subject of the distribution of legislative powers between the Union and the States are defined under several articles; the most important in this regard being specifically under articles 245 and 246 of the Constitution of India
It contains three lists; i.e. Union List, State List, and Concurrent List.
Article 245 extent of laws made by Parliament and by the Legislatures of States:
  • Subject to the provisions of this Constitution, Parliament may make laws for the whole or any part of the territory of India, and the Legislature of a State may make laws for the whole or any part of the State.
  • No law made by Parliament shall be deemed to be invalid on the ground that it would have extra territorial operation.
