A Bourdon gauge mounted on a closed pressurized container showing 65 KPa at Hyderabad where the atmospheric pressure is 100 KPa. If the container is now carried to a higher elevation (Ooty) where the atmospheric pressure is 90 KPa, what new reading will be shown by the bourdon gauge at Ooty?
  • a)
    65 KPa
  • b)
    45 KPa
  • c)
    75 KPa
  • d)
    155 KPa
Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?

A Bourdon gauge mounted on a closed pressurized container showing 65 K...
Pabs = Patm + Pgauge. So Pabs of container = 100+65 = 165. Now new Pgauge = Pabs - Patm = 165-90 = 75.

A Bourdon gauge mounted on a closed pressurized container showing 65 K...
Bourdon Gauge Reading at Different Elevation

Given:
Pressure at Hyderabad, P1 = 65 KPa
Atmospheric pressure at Hyderabad, Pa1 = 100 KPa
Atmospheric pressure at Ooty, Pa2 = 90 KPa

To find:
New reading of Bourdon gauge at Ooty, P2

Solution:
Bourdon gauge measures the pressure difference between the inside of the container and the atmospheric pressure. The pressure inside the container is given by the Bourdon gauge reading + atmospheric pressure.

P1 = Bourdon gauge reading + Pa1
Bourdon gauge reading = P1 - Pa1
Bourdon gauge reading = 65 - 100
Bourdon gauge reading = -35 KPa (negative sign indicates the pressure inside the container is less than atmospheric pressure)

To find the new reading of the Bourdon gauge at Ooty, we need to calculate the pressure inside the container at Ooty.

P2 = Bourdon gauge reading + Pa2
Bourdon gauge reading = P2 - Pa2

Substituting the value of Bourdon gauge reading from the above equation,

-35 = P2 - 90
P2 = 55 KPa

Therefore, the new reading of the Bourdon gauge at Ooty will be 55 KPa.

Conclusion:
When a closed pressurized container is taken to a higher elevation where the atmospheric pressure is lower than the pressure at the initial location, the pressure inside the container decreases. The Bourdon gauge reading also decreases as it measures the pressure difference between the inside of the container and the atmospheric pressure.
