Indian education structure and management were guided by New Education Policy, of 1986 for a long time (almost 34 years). In the meantime, a lot of changes have taken place globally as well as a debate has also emerged in India about a ‘Bharat-centric’ policy on education.

In order to look into those, a new committee was set up under the chairmanship of Dr. K. Kasturirangan in June 2017. After reviewing the suggestions, the committee finalized the policy under the name National Education Policy, 2020 on July 29, 2020.

Major recommendations of the policy were -

The aim of equity and inclusion is now at the heart of the new NEP so the classroom should be inclusive.
Ensuring universal access at all levels of schooling from pre-primary school to Grade 12.
Ensuring quality early childhood care and education for all children between 3-6 years.
New Curricular and Pedagogical Structure (5+3+3+4)including foundational, preparatory, middle, and secondary.
Establishing National Mission on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy.
Emphasis on promoting multilingualism and Indian languages.
Exposure to vocational education in school and higher education system.
Focus on Formative and Diagnostic Assessment.
Setting up multidisciplinary education and research universities(MERUs).
Setting up of National Research Foundation(NRF).
Multidisciplinary approach and focus on creative and divergent thinking.
Experiential learning using previous knowledge and experiences.
Teacher Education - 4-year integrated stage-specific, subject-specific Bachelor of Education.
