Let the speed of the man in still water be x km/hr and the speed of the stream be y km/hr.
Upstream speed =  x − y = 5 km/hr
Downstream speed = x + y = 9 km/hr
Adding the two equations:
(x − y) + (x + y) = 5 + 9
2x = 14
x =7km/hr
Subtracting the two equations:
(x + y) − (x − y) = 9 − 5
2y = 4
y = 2km/hr
