The water molecules move across the cell membrane by travelling along the concentration gradient of the solution (low to high).Land plants get their water supply from soil which serves as the source of water and [minerals]. The way in which water from soil enters roots, particularly to the root xylem, is called "mechanism of water absorption.

Absorption of water in plants is carried out for making out many metabolic activites of plants. It is carried out by a specialised tissue known as "xylem". process of absorption of water is continuous coz transpiration (loss of water from aerial parts of plants) is caused due to photosynthesis. hope uh got it :)
