Read the following statement and explanation and answer as per the option given below :      [IIT-2001]
Statement-I : F atom has a less negative electron gain enthalpy affinity than Cl atom.
Statement-II : Additional electrons are repelled more effectively by 3 p electrons in Cl atom than by 2p electron in F atom
  • a)
If both Statement-I and Statement-II are correct, and Statement-II is the correct ex planation of the Statement-I
  • b)
If both Statement-I and Statement-II are correct, but Statement-II is not correct
    explanation of the Statement-I
  • c)
If Statement-I is correct but Statement-II is incorrect
  • d)
If Statement-I is incorrect but Statement-II is correct
Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?

Statement 1 is correct and statement 2 is incorrect.

it is true that electron affinity of fluorine is less than that of chlorine because of greater repulsion in 2P electrons than in 3p electrons.

size of 2P orbital is less than 3p orbital of fluorine and chlorine respectively and this is the reason for the greater repulsion in fluorine atom.
