The Third Estate hugely benefited from revolution. This comprised the professional classes, small and big businessmen, small and big peasants, landless labourers and servants. Most of them got land to till, the burden of taxation was removed and rule of law was established.

The First and Second Estate were forced to relinquish power, the churches were shutdown and the church property was confiscated. The predominance of First and Second Estate over administration, social and economic privileges were abolished and equality was established.

The common people were disappointed with the outcome of the revolution. Although principles of equality, liberty and fraternity were implemented in France, the French society remained a divided house between haves and havenots.

The Beneficiaries of the French Revolution:

  • The bourgeoisie: The French Revolution brought significant benefits to the bourgeoisie, the middle class. They were able to seize power from the aristocracy and the monarchy, and their economic and social status improved significantly. The Revolution abolished feudalism, which had imposed numerous obligations and restrictions on the bourgeoisie's economic activities. They also gained political influence and power, as the Revolution established a constitutional monarchy and later a republic.

  • The peasantry: The revolution brought relief to the peasantry, who were the largest social group in France. Feudal dues and obligations were abolished, and the peasantry gained ownership of the land they had previously worked on as tenants or serfs. This allowed them to improve their economic conditions and have greater control over their lives.

  • The urban workers: The Revolution also brought some benefits to the urban workers. The abolition of guilds and restrictions on trade allowed for greater economic opportunities. Additionally, the establishment of the revolutionary government led to the creation of the Committee of Public Safety, which implemented measures to address social issues and improve the living conditions of workers.

The Loss of Power:

  • The aristocracy: The French Revolution marked the downfall of the aristocracy. Many nobles were forced to relinquish their privileges, titles, and lands. The monarchy was abolished, and the power and influence of the aristocracy were significantly diminished.

  • The clergy: The Catholic Church in France also lost power during the revolution. The French Revolution led to the nationalization of church lands and the establishment of a state-controlled church. The clergy lost their privileges and were subjected to strict control and regulation by the revolutionary government.

Disappointed Sections of Society:

  • The radical revolutionaries: Some sections of society, particularly the radical revolutionaries, were disappointed with the outcome of the revolution. They desired a more radical transformation of society and were dissatisfied with the compromises made by the moderate revolutionaries. They believed that the revolutionary government did not go far enough in implementing their ideals and principles.

  • The royalists: The supporters of the monarchy and the old regime were also disappointed with the outcome of the revolution. They opposed the overthrow of the monarchy and the establishment of a republic. The execution of King Louis XVI and the subsequent Reign of Terror further solidified their opposition to the revolution.

Overall, while the French Revolution brought significant benefits to the bourgeoisie, peasantry, and urban workers, there were also sections of society, such as the aristocracy, clergy, radical revolutionaries, and royalists, who were forced to relinquish power or were disappointed with the outcome of the revolution. The revolution marked a significant shift in power dynamics and social structure in France, leading to both positive and negative consequences for different sections of society.
