Verified Answer
Match the following with correct response.(1) Separation of cream from...
(a) The process of centrifugation is used in dairies to separate cream from milk. Centrifugation is a method for separating the suspended particles of a substance from a liquid in which the mixture is rotated at a high speed in a centrifuge machine.
(b) Oil being lighter forms the top layer, while water being heavier forms the bottom layer. Oil can be separated by decantation. However, a more useful method for separating oil and water is with the separating funnel.
(c) Chromatography is a technique used to separate the chemical compounds (pigments) of a mixture. One of the most common types is called paper chromatography.
(d) Air can be separated into its components of air through fractional distillation. In the fractional distillation process, the liquid air is distributed through the fractional distillation column. Here, the liquid air is permissible to warm-up. The liquid oxygen will be gathered in the fractionating column.

Community Answer
Match the following with correct response.(1) Separation of cream from...
Separation Techniques and their Applications:

1) Separation of cream from milk:
- Cream is separated from milk to obtain milk with a lower fat content.
- The process is known as creaming or skimming.
- The technique used for this separation is centrifugation.
- Centrifugation involves spinning a mixture at high speeds to separate the components based on their densities.
- The cream, which is lighter, rises to the top while the milk, which is denser, settles at the bottom.

2) Separation of oil from water:
- Oil and water are immiscible liquids, meaning they do not mix together.
- To separate oil from water, a technique called separating funnel is used.
- A separating funnel has a conical shape with a tap at the bottom to drain out the separated liquids.
- The oil, being less dense, forms the upper layer, while the water forms the lower layer.
- By opening the tap, the oil can be collected separately from the water.

3) Separation of pigment from natural colors:
- Pigments are substances that give color to materials.
- Natural colors often contain pigments that need to be separated for various purposes.
- One common technique for this separation is chromatography.
- Chromatography involves the movement of a mixture through a medium, such as filter paper or a column, based on the differences in the components' solubility.
- As the mixture moves through the medium, the different pigments separate and can be identified based on their characteristic colors.

4) Separation of components of air:
- Air is a mixture of different gases, including nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and trace amounts of other gases.
- To separate the components of air, a technique called fractional distillation is used.
- Fractional distillation takes advantage of the differences in boiling points of the components.
- The air is first cooled and compressed to convert it into a liquid state.
- Then, the liquid air is slowly heated, and as the temperature rises, different gases evaporate at their respective boiling points.
- The evaporated gases are collected and condensed to obtain the individual components of air.

Matching the techniques with the corresponding separations:
- Separation of cream from milk: (D) Centrifugation
- Separation of oil from water: (A) Separating funnel
- Separation of pigment from natural colors: (C) Chromatography
- Separation of components of air: (B) Fractional distillation

Therefore, the correct answer is option 'D': 1-C, 2-A, 3-B, 4-D.
