When oil is sprinkled on the surface of water, the surface tension of water is decreased due to the following reasons:
1. Disrupts Hydrogen Bonding: Water molecules are attracted to each other by hydrogen bonding. When oil is sprinkled on the surface of water, it disrupts the hydrogen bonding between the water molecules which reduces the surface tension of water.
2. Oil Molecules are Non-Polar: Oil molecules are non-polar and do not have any charge. Hence, they do not interact with the polar water molecules. As a result, the oil molecules spread over the surface of water and form a thin film. This thin film reduces the surface tension of water.
Mosquitoes lay their eggs on the surface of water because of the surface tension of water. The surface tension of water allows the mosquito to stand on the surface of water and lay their eggs.
