Tangential force: A force which acts on a moving body in the direction of a tangent to the path of the body, its effect being to increase or diminish the velocity; - distinguished from a normal force, which acts at right angles to the tangent and changes the direction of the motion without changing the velocity.

When deforming force acts tangentially over an area the body gets sheared through a certain angle.Tangential stress comes into picture when there is a relative displacement between various layers of solid. Here deforming force is applied tangential to one of the faces. so it's A

Tangential Stress:
When a deforming force produces shear strain, the type of stress that is produced in a body is tangential stress. Tangential stress, also known as shear stress, refers to the stress that occurs when two adjacent planes within a body slide past each other in opposite directions. It is perpendicular to the normal stress and acts parallel to the area over which it acts.

Explanation:
When an external force is applied to a solid object, it causes deformation in the object. Deformation can occur in different ways, such as stretching, compression, or shearing. Shear strain specifically refers to the deformation that occurs when parallel planes within a body slide past each other in opposite directions.

To understand tangential stress, imagine two blocks of material stacked on top of each other. When a deforming force is applied parallel to the top surface of the upper block in one direction and parallel to the bottom surface of the lower block in the opposite direction, the two blocks slide past each other. This sliding motion causes shear strain between the two blocks.

The tangential stress is the force per unit area that is acting parallel to the surfaces of the blocks in the direction of the applied force. It is called tangential stress because it acts tangentially to the surfaces of the object. The magnitude of tangential stress is directly proportional to the force applied and inversely proportional to the area over which the force is applied.

In contrast, normal stress refers to the stress that occurs when a deforming force is applied perpendicular to the surface of an object. It acts normal or perpendicular to the surface over which it acts. Longitudinal stress refers to the stress that occurs when a deforming force is applied in the same direction as the length of an object.

Therefore, when a deforming force produces shear strain, the stress that is produced in a body is tangential stress or shear stress.
