Verified Answer
The organometallic compound W(C5H5)2(CO)2 follows the 18-electron rule...
W is 6 electron species while CO will give 2 electrons
So, 1W + 2(CO) = 10 electrons.
Remaining 8 electrons will be coming from 2Cp.
Hapticity means no of electrons donated by the ligand.
Here 5 + 3 = 8. So one Cp = 5
Hapticity One Cp = 3
Hapticity Total 1 W + 2 (CO) + 1 ( Cp-5) + 1 (Cp-3)
= 6+4+5+3
= 18
Therefore, correct answer is B.

The organometallic compound W(C5H5)2(CO)2 follows the 18-electron rule...
Explanation:

- The 18-electron rule is a rule in organometallic chemistry that states that stable metal complexes tend to have 18 valence electrons. This rule is derived from the fact that the noble gas configuration of argon (or any other noble gas) has 18 electrons.
- W(C5H5)2(CO)2 is a metal complex that contains a tungsten atom (W) coordinated to two cyclopentadienyl ligands (C5H5) and two carbonyl ligands (CO). The total number of valence electrons in this compound can be calculated as follows:

W: 1 x 6 = 6 electrons
C5H5: 5 x 2 = 10 electrons (since each cyclopentadienyl ligand contributes 5 electrons)
CO: 2 x 2 = 4 electrons (since each carbonyl ligand contributes 2 electrons)

Total: 6 + 10 + 4 = 20 electrons

- Since this compound has 20 valence electrons, it violates the 18-electron rule. However, it is stabilized by the two cyclopentadienyl ligands, which are able to donate electrons to the metal center and reduce the formal oxidation state of the tungsten atom.
- The hapticity of a ligand refers to the number of atoms in the ligand that are directly bonded to the metal center. In the case of cyclopentadienyl ligands, the hapticity can be either 5 or 3, depending on whether the ligand is bound to the metal center through all five carbon atoms or only three carbon atoms, respectively.
- In W(C5H5)2(CO)2, both cyclopentadienyl ligands are bound to the metal center through three carbon atoms, giving a hapticity of 3. Therefore, the correct answer is option B (3 and 5 is incorrect).

The organometallic compound W(C5H5)2(CO)2 follows the 18-electron rule...
Here W is 6 elecron species while CO will give 2 electrons so by 1W + 2(CO) = 10 electrons. Remains 8 electrons will be comes from 2Cp. Heptacity means no of electrons donate by the ligand.. Here 5+3=8.So one Cp = 5 Heptacity One Cp =3 Heptacity Total 1 W + 2 (CO) + 1 ( Cp-5) + 1 (Cp-3) = 6+4+5+3 = 18 electrons satisfied.
