Differentiate between a change in demand and change in quantity demanded?
Verified Answer
Differentiate between a change in demand and change in quantity demand...
Change in Quantity demanded refers to movements along the demand curve which are caused due to change in own price of a commodity. This results in two situations, extension of demand which is caused when own price of commodity falls and there is a rise in quantity demanded for the commodity or contraction of demand which is caused when own price of commodity rises and there is fall in the quantity demanded for the commodity. In extension of demand we move rightwards on the demand curve and in contraction of demand we move leftwards on the demand curve.

Change in Demand refers to shifts in demand which are caused due to changes in all other determinants of demand other than own price of commodity, these determinants include the level of income, income distribution, expectations, tastes and preferences etc. This results in two situations, increase in demand which is caused when determinants are in favor of demand like expectation in the economy is favorable for demand and hence there is a rightward shift in the demand curve showing increase in demand. The other situation is of decrease in demand which is caused when determinants are unfavorable to demand like expectation is unfavorable in the economy and hence there is a leftward shift in the demand curve showing decrease in demand.
