Last Mughal Ruler - Bahadur Shah Zafar II

Bahadur Shah Zafar II was the last Mughal ruler who reigned from 1837 to 1857. He was the son of Akbar Shah II and was born in Delhi in 1775. Zafar II was a poet and a calligrapher who was interested in art and culture.

Reign and downfall

Zafar II became the emperor of India at the age of 62 in 1837. However, his reign was largely symbolic, as the British East India Company had already established control over most of India. The British treated him as a figurehead and did not allow him to exercise any real power.

In 1857, a rebellion broke out against the British rule in India, known as the Indian Rebellion of 1857 or the Sepoy Mutiny. The rebels declared Zafar II as their leader and he supported the uprising. However, the rebellion was eventually crushed by the British and Zafar II was exiled to Rangoon (now Yangon) in Burma (now Myanmar) along with his family.

Life in exile and death

Zafar II spent the last years of his life in exile in Rangoon. He continued to write poetry and paint despite his deteriorating health. He died on November 7, 1862, at the age of 87.

Zafar II was buried in Rangoon, but in 1903, his remains were exhumed and taken to India. His tomb is located in the courtyard of the Roshan-ud-Daula mosque in Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, Delhi.

Legacy

Bahadur Shah Zafar II is remembered as the last Mughal ruler who was a patron of art and culture. He was a poet, calligrapher, and painter who supported many artists and musicians during his reign. His poetry is still read and appreciated in India and Pakistan.

Zafar II is also remembered for his role in the Indian Rebellion of 1857. He became a symbol of resistance against British imperialism and his support for the rebellion inspired many Indians to fight for their independence.
