Once the auditor has been appointed he should be issued a letter of engagement specifying the scope of work and the nature of duties to be performed by him in the company. The main preliminaries before the commencement of the audit of a company are that the auditor has to obtain a clearance from the previous auditor of the company His appointment should be in conformity with the provisions of the Companies Act. The Memorandum and Articles of Association should be consulted with reference to clauses affecting the accounts and audit. He should familiarize himself with the technical knowledge of the company.
He should advise the company to complete the records and prepare the final accounts of the company. He should inquire about the internal control system of the company. He should ask for the audited Balance Sheet and the auditor’s report of the previous year. He should design the nature and extent of audit tests appropriate to the company. He should outline the nature and scope of work and duties and the time of completion of the audit report. He should get the list of the books maintained in the company, the persons who are responsible for maintaining them and their specimen signatures.
